Shalimar: Montre Flacon

Flacon Montre (Watch Bottle) c1936-1999

Starting in 1936, Shalimar came in a round, disk shaped eau de cologne bottle with a cone shaped stopper. This is called the Montre, or watch bottle. Flacon created by Pochet et du Courval to hold eaux de cologne, first used with Cachet Jaune in 1936, also held various other scents such as Shalimar, Mitsouko, Jicky, Fol Arome, Chamade, Chant D'Aromes, Liu, L'Heure Bleue, Vol de Nuit, Sous Le Vent, Chypre 53, Parure and more.

Jicky c1889

Jicky by Guerlain: originally created in 1889. It is a classical fragrance and, despite the age, it is timeless and still very modern.

According to the legend, the perfume was named after a girl Aimé Guerlain was in love with when he was a student in England, and then it was said that the perfume was named after his uncle Jacques Guerlain’s nickname – Jicky.

It is more likely, though, that Aimé, a gay man, was hiding his love for someone else named Jacques and someone at Guerlain created the story of a long lost female love to hide his sexuality and to protect the reputation of Guerlain during the late 1800s, which is not unreasonable given the time period.

In 1911, Gabriel Guerlain said "the name Jicky (diminutive of Jack) was the familiar name of one of my many sons when he was a child. As we found it original we gave it to one of our scents."

Apres L'Ondee c1906

Apres L'Ondee: (After the Shower), created by Jacques Guerlain in 1906 based on the formula for Voilette de Madame. Pronounced "AHPRAY-LUNDAY."

Though I have seen Apres L'Ondee perfume referenced as being made in 1898 in two different publications (Comment un nom devient une griffe, by Lucien Francois, 1961).

Its inspiration was the unique smell of a spring-time garden after a downpour, smell of wet leaves and flowers warmed by the sunshine.

Chamade c1969

Chamade was created by Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1969, and it was inspired by the Francoise Sagan's novel “La Chamade”. In the time of Napoleon, ‘chamade’ was a very fast drumbeat that called to retreat.

"Chamade—The start of a love story is something as small as a moment's heartfall. Guerlain named Chamade after that moment."

Fleur de Feu c1948

Fleur de Feu: (Flower of Fire) Created by Jacques Guerlain in 1948, in USA in 1949, the name comes from the idea of flowers rising from the flames – like a phoenix. This was Guerlain’s first perfume after the World War II. Also created to celebrate Guerlain's 120th anniversary. Packaged in a fluted crystal bottle encased in a chest of grey suede embellished in gold.
