Vol de Nuit 80th Anniversary Limited Edition Parfum c2013

2013 marks the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Vol de Nuit perfume. To celebrate these gloriously scented years, Guerlain is offering a limited edition of the perfume.

Guerlain's archives have given up 46 empty, vintage flacons, all of the 56ml capacity, and will be filled with the new formulation of Vol de Nuit's parfum. Each bottle's metal label and stopper cover will be richly gilded with real gold leaf. Each bottle will retail for the princely sum of 6500 euros.

Limited edition of only 46 examples of vintage Rayonnant flacons, metal mountings richly gilded, 56ml, filled with current Vol de Nuit parfum, retailing for 6500 euros each.

• Top notes: Bergamot, galbanum, and petitgrain.
• Heart notes: Jasmine, daffodil, and spices.
• Base notes: Wood, iris, vanilla, amber notes, and an earthy forest note.

Vol de Nuit derives its name from the novel by Antoine de Saint Exupery, which relates the drama and excitement of the early years of aviation. In the novel, a pilot, newly wed, loses control of his aircraft, while his wife in the control tower waits feverishly for a sign of life. Vol de Nuit is a vibrant homage to this moving love story and to women who know how to live with danger.

The design in relief on the smoked glass bottle represents the moving propeller of an aircraft, while the name is cut out of a circle of gold metal suggesting the propeller belt. In the limited edition, this feature is richly gilded with real gold leaf.

Guerlain's Scented Flannel For Dali In Venice

"In 1961, Salvador Dalí and Maurice Béjart created the ballet Gala , preceded by a baroque opera by Gonfalioneri: La Dame espagnole et le chevalier romain . The show, conceived as "théâtre total", was performed in 1961 at La Fenice in Venice and a few months later in the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels and Paris in 1962.

Despite the historic importance of Maurice Béjart and his innovations in choreography, and the importance of this historic collaboration between two major innovators of the 20 th century, no study has ever explored this event whose principal dancer was the famous ballerina La Tcherina. This remarkable artistic creation was also multi-sensorial: the first performance ever to use perfume as the main scenographic element. A renowned partner cooperated in this project: the French Maison Guerlain designed the perfume Nébuleuse specifically for this occasion, at Dalí's request. The name of the perfume is related to Gala's name, the wife of the painter. Big barrels of perfume were installed on the stage, and were representing the essence of femininity. Men on wheelchairs would pull perfume through long vertical crutches which acted as pulleys."

The barrels were filled with a perfumed liquid specially prepared by Guerlain to produce weird geometric soap bubbles.

The perfume was used to mask the odor of the rotting carcass that was a feature of the production.

Dali's staff came to an arrangement with Guerlain, the French perfume manufacturer, that in return for generous publicity for their expensive product the theatre would be sprayed with their most exquisite perfume.

Also, Decca Records wanted to include some sort of scented product along with the record of the performance which would heighten the listener's enjoyment. They thought of the decaying carcass, but on second thought, realized that it would be tricky to manufacture, a record that emanated this type of scent. Sensing another way to publicly advertise their perfumes, Guerlain decided to include a flannel sachet scented with Vol de Nuit perfume that was said to be used in the stage presentation to be packaged along with the record, at no extra charge to Decca. Instructions for the flannel stated: " In this envelope you will find a flannel to scent your lingerie."

Vol de Nuit Evasion c2007

Vol de Nuit Evasion: created by Mathilde Laurent.in 2007 in cooperation with Alea, the chain of airport duty free shops, and it can only be purchased at the Alea stores in France and Great Britain, as well as the Guerlain boutiques.

A fragrance with a sweet opening of rose and peach, evolving towards waves of jasmine and iris. The oriental trail is warmed with woods, amber and vanilla.” 

Vol de Nuit c1933

Vol de Nuit: (night-flight) was created in 1933 by Jacques Guerlain. Pronounced "VOL-DUH-NEWEE."

It was named after Antoine Saint Exupery's second novel 'Night Flight', a fragrant story of love and romance of the first years of aviation.

Every year the Air Force College at Salon-de-Provence orders Vol de Nuit in presentation boxes decorated with the emblem of the French Wings. These are distributed by the Cadets during official visits to other countries.
