Shalimar by Guerlain c1925

Shalimar perfume was originally created in 1921 by Guerlain. It was re-released during the Art Deco Exhibition in Paris in 1925. I have separate blog posts on Shalimar bottles and its flanker scents.

Shalimar Eau Legere Parfumee c2003

Shalimar Eau Legere Parfumee by Guerlain: launched in 2003, also known as Shalimar Light Fragrance. It was created by Mathilde Laurent, a young in-house Guerlain perfumer.

Eau de Shalimar c2008

Eau de Shalimar by Guerlain: launched in 2008.  According to Guerlain's own information, it's only a repackaging of the successful Shalimar Eau Légère Parfumée, composed by Mathilde Laurent in 2003. Jean-Paul Guerlain reworked it slightly in 2004 and the fragrance was then attributed to him.

Shalimar Oiseau de Paradis c2009

Shalimar Oiseau de Paradis by Guerlain: launched in 2009. This is a limited edition collector's bottle, there is no change to the fragrance.

From Guerlain:

"Guerlain has imagined a legendary décor to accompany the new opus of Shalimar eau de parfum. The slender silhouette of the perfume’s two guardian angels throws a matte shadow outline against the night-blue backdrop of the box, illuminated by the gentle shimmer of the golden logo.
The bottle’s feminine shoulders appear bathed in glossy moonlight, wearing a sophisticated silk feather draping around the neck, held in place by a blue satin ribbon.  The Oiseau de Paradis signature is inscribed in golden ink with light, slender handwriting, resembling the creatures that have inspired it.
A sort of invitation to a mirage, in which dreams could take flight into the evening light, rising towards other tales that Shalimar may soon whisper to us in our sleep…"

Shalimar Oiseau de Paradis was available as 50 ml Shalimar Eau de Parfum.

Shalimar Ode de la Vanille Sur la Route de Madagascar c2012

Shalimar Ode La Vanille Sur la Route de Madagascar by Guerlain: launched in 2012.

Created by Thierry Wasser, who traveled to the plantations on the Vanilla Coast of Madagascar to obtain the precious Sambava vanilla.

To ensure the high quality and enhance the exquisite scent profile, the local artisans must treat the varietal vanilla for 18 months. The vanilla was further processed in France, where the delicate orchid was prepared by technology and infused for a month's time in order to capture all of the essences that makes this varietal vanilla so prized above others. The final tincture has been retained solely for the usage by Guerlain.

Shalimar Fourreau du Soir c2011

Shalimar 'Fourreau du Soir' is a limited edition collector's bottle, made in honor of the legendary perfume in 2011.

Only the bottle is different, the fragrance remains the same. Available in 50 ml Shalimar Eau de Parfum.

The fragrance comes in the Jade Jagger designed Shalimar bottle covered in delicate black lace and finished with a glossy leather band wrapped around the top. The bottle retains its blue plastic cap.

Shalimar Parfum Initial A Fleur de Peau c2012

Shalimar Parfum Initial 'A Fleur de Peau' is the name given to a limited edition collector's bottle from 2012. Manufactured by Baccarat, the crystal bottle was adorned with a Gripoix necklace of flesh colored smalt set into gold filigree. Shalimar Parfum Initial L'Eau c2012

Shalimar Parfum Initial c2011

Shalimar Parfum Initial by Guerlain: launched in 2011. Created by Thierry Wasser and meant to appeal to younger audiences who may find Shalimar to be too heavy and mature, but would still like to wear a form of Shalimar.

French Kiss c2014

French Kiss by Guerlain: launched in October 2014. Created by Thierry Wasser as an homage to the successful KissKiss lipstick range, which is celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year. French Kiss joins the Les Elixirs Charnels collection of haute fragrances. Double Extrait de Rose du Roi c1900

Double Extrait de Rose du Roi by Guerlain: launched around 1900.

Guerlain's Lotion Vegetale

Guerlain's Lotion Vegetale is a scented liquid hair groom to women,  as well as for men's heads and facial hair. The lotion vegetale was meant to give a lustrous, healthy finish and scent to the hair as well as making it soft. It was a watery, alcohol based (approximately 87° alcohol) hair tonic, usually mixed with glycerine and other components and available in several different fragrances.

Lotion vegetale was suggested to be used by women when curling their hair, if the ends of the hair are brittle. A woman was advised to pour a few drops into the palms of the hands and then rubbed onto the dry ends of the hair before rolling them in curlers. This would help make the ringlets soft and shining.

"Women apply Lotion Vegetale generously to the hair after a shampoo...to impart lasting scent and to stimulate the scalp. Men like it as an aftershave lotion and general grooming aid. In ten Guerlain fragrances: Liu, Shalimar, Vol de Nuit, L'Heure Bleue, Mitsouko, Jicky, Sous le Vent, Rue de la Paix, Vague Souvenir and Apres L'Ondee."

Jockey Club by Guerlain c1846

Jockey Club by Guerlain, launched by 1846, likely originated in the 1830s, aligning with the era's flourishing perfume trends. The name "Jockey Club" evokes a sense of elite sophistication and high society, drawing inspiration from prestigious horse racing clubs of the time. The term "Jockey Club" generally refers to a social club associated with horse racing, and in this context, it most likely alludes to the prestigious Epsom Downs in England or the Jockey Club of Paris, which were both renowned for their exclusivity and elegance.

The imagery associated with "Jockey Club" conjures visions of opulent gatherings, stylish horse races, and the refined ambiance of the social elite. It suggests a fragrance designed for those who enjoy luxury and high-status events, reflecting the grandeur and exclusivity of such occasions. The scent of "Jockey Club" would have been interpreted as both sophisticated and subtly robust, embodying the elegance and vigor associated with high-class racing and social circles.

During the 19th century, when "Jockey Club" was introduced, the fragrance market was burgeoning with a variety of elaborate and exotic scents. Fragrances of the time often featured complex blends of floral and spicy notes, with an increasing emphasis on the use of both natural and synthetic ingredients to enhance longevity and depth. "Jockey Club" fit within this trend, incorporating a floral bouquet enriched with animalic undertones, a combination that resonated with contemporary tastes for both freshness and warmth.

Women of the period, accustomed to the burgeoning array of sophisticated fragrances, would have found "Jockey Club" appealing for its association with prestige and luxury. The perfume's formulation, reflecting the trends of the time, would have included a blend of natural extracts and, later, synthetics, to create a scent profile that was both classic and innovative. By the late 19th century, the fragrance was reformulated in 1879, reflecting the ongoing evolution in perfumery practices and the shifting preferences of a discerning clientele.

Santal by Guerlain c1878

Santal by Guerlain, introduced in 1878, likely originated in the 1830s, reflecting the rich tradition of fragrance craftsmanship in that era. The name "Santal," derived from the French term for sandalwood, evokes a sense of exoticism and warmth. Sandalwood, known for its deep, woody aroma, is central to the fragrance, suggesting an olfactory journey to distant, sun-drenched lands where the wood's creamy, sensual scent flourishes. The term "Santal" conjures images of serene, ancient forests and the luxurious, comforting embrace of sandalwood, resonating with both men and women seeking a scent that exudes sophistication and refinement.

In the context of the 19th century, Santal was a symbol of elegance and opulence, aligning with contemporary trends that favored rich, complex fragrances. During this period, perfumery was experiencing a renaissance, with new formulations blending natural extracts, infusions, and absolutes to create layered, nuanced scents. Santal stood out for its focus on sandalwood, a relatively rare and prized ingredient, which offered a distinctive alternative to the more floral and citrus-heavy fragrances popular at the time.

Formulas for Santal appeared in various perfumery manuals and pharmacopeias, highlighting its significance and widespread acceptance. The fragrance's popularity was such that Guerlain, like many other perfumeries crafted their versions, each adding their unique twist to the base composition. As the century progressed, the introduction of synthetic ingredients like vanillin and coumarin began to influence perfume creation, offering more consistent and long-lasting representations of traditional scents. Despite these advancements, the classic allure of Santal endured, cementing its place in the pantheon of 19th-century fragrances and continuing to captivate well into the later years.
